The Brat is Back

and how to communicate your hot take on intermissions 📢

Hello! I’m Ben, executive director at the Phipps.

Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.

Listen.
I’m sorry, okay?
It’s been over a month since the last Flying P, and that’s on me.
My fault. My bad. I’m the worst.

However, I do have an excuse: I’ve been researching popcorn flavors for this weekend’s Bach to the Future organ concert, which is the second Pipes and Pops event of the season. Will this flavor of popcorn blow your mind enough to justify an entire month of Flying P-less days? There’s only one way to find out: TICKETS HERE. 🙂

This issue has…

  • 🌭 More Hotdog Debating
we need to write a play about this

  • 📢 Your POV
or at least space for it

  • 🫧 Bubble Blowing
    why not, right?

FEEDBACK

Hot takes wanted (don’t make us guess)

Seth Meyers Lol GIF by Late Night with Seth Meyers

The PCA is in the process of putting together the 2026/27 season. I’m very excited about how things are shaping up but I’d like to hear more from YOU.

For example…

  • Do you really love matinees as much as it seems like you do?…even on Saturdays?

  • Do you prefer longer shows with an intermission, or would you like a quick, one-act, 75-minute event that gets you in-and-out?

  • Do you think our ticket prices are okay, or too expensive? Maybe you think we should be charging more!

  • Season Pass sales have been on the decline pretty much everywhere (including the Phipps). What don’t you like about season passes? Do they need to be more flexible? Are they too expensive? Do you just not want to plan that far into the future?

Hit reply to this email and send me ALL your feedback regarding the above or anything else you want to get off your chest.

FEEDBACK

KetchupGate, 2026

In the last issue of the P, I made a single, solitary reference to the ketchup-on-a-brat debate from last summer, and y’all STILL piped in with some strong opinions.

I can maybe understand a brat, but WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DOESN’T EAT KETCHUP ON A HOTDOG?! In fact, I’ll do you one further: who in their right mind doesn’t eat a fully dressed all-beef dog every single time, with onions, mustard, relish, celery salt, and ketchup on a poppy seed bun?!?! The only response to this setup? YES CHEF.

I’ll continue to monitor this debate and send updates as needed.
Thanks.

my favorite gallery piece of the week
As a bubble-blower myself, I connect deeply with this one from Jane in the Riverview Gallery. Don’t dilly-dally. This exhibition is only around until Feb 8th.

Statement about the statement

You may have seen that the PCA put out a statement yesterday addressing the current events in our region. I’m not going to say much about it here, as I think it speaks for itself.

But the Flying P is about giving you an insider peek into the Phipps and specifically my day-to-day at this organization…so in that vein, I will say this: the PCA’s board spent serious time thinking about that statement. The pros and cons were thoughtfully weighed and debated respectfully. The group consistently demonstrated an unwavering care for the community of Hudson and the St. Croix Valley as a whole. I’m extremely proud of how the Phipps board conducted itself and I feel grateful to be part of an organization that’s willing to lead even when it’s uncomfortable.

Lastly, if you’re an artist wanting to do more, here’s a good list that was compiled by our friends at Theater Mu.

Are you the smartest Flying P reader the world has ever known?
Time to prove it. It’s The Flying C(rossword)!
