and how to easily score a Row K ticket šŸŽŸļø

Hello! I’m Ben, executive director at the Phipps.

Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.

Before we get into it, there are two things coming up from our pals over at the St. Croix Valley Opera that I think you should know about:

  • Hudson Bandshell Concert
    July 16, 2026, at 7:00 PM - Lakefront Park
It’s the St. Croix Valley Opera. And it’s FREE. You can’t miss.

  • Opera on the River
Saturday, July 25, 2026 - Lowell Park South, Stillwater, MN
If you’ve never attended this event, it’s time. It’s the perfect summer event. Do you need to love opera? NO. But you likely will end up loving it if you attend.

This issue has…

  • 🐶 A Furry Thank-You
    still a good boy

  • šŸŽ¹ A Real Pipedream
    after a solid year

  • šŸ¤– Root Beer & Robots
    not at the same time

Our theater organ is famous now

David doing his thing at the PCA last year

Pipedreams, a national public radio program dedicated to celebrating the pipe organ, stopped by the PCA about a year ago to chat with David Wickerham. David was there to perform in our 24/25 season at the time, and was nice enough to give Pipedreams some of his time.

Cut to today: Pipedreams has finally gotten around to posting about their time at the Phipps, and there’s some really great stuff. You can check it out by visiting their Facebook page or you can click on the image above. If you don’t have Facebook, I think you’re out of luck…although, you’re also sort of in luck because you’re not on Facebook.

And guess what: David will be back in our 2026/27 season next June. Grab your tickets today!

PROGRAMMING

Robots, root beer, and responsible planning

Here are a couple of things I’d like to put on your radar, as they may affect your PCA plans:

  • Tucker’s Robot: this is a free, outdoor puppet show coming to Hudson from our friends at Open Eye Theatre. Our first year presenting the Driveway Tour (that’s what they call it), we had maaaaybe 25 people in attendance. Last year, that jumped to 50-ish. This year, we have 44 people who’ve already RSVP’d. My guess is it’s going to be VERY WELL ATTENDED. If you’re planning on going, I’d suggest getting there a touch on the early side to get a good spot…and remember to bring sunscreen, water, a blanket to sit on, etc.

last year’s Driveway Tour happened in the black box due to poor air quality

  • The Root Beer Lady: I wanted to give you a friendly heads up that we’ve decided to add a performance of The Root Beer Lady due to our initial offering basically being sold out (there are 17 seats left). And the show is in October. I guess you guys like root beer. Or ladies. Or more likely, both. Anyway, if you missed out on a good seat with the first performance, now’s your chance to grab something in beloved Row K. The added perf is on Saturday, October 3rd at 7pm. Click here for tix.

probably root beer in that bucket

DEVELOPMENT

ā€œThanks for the treats!ā€

waiting patiently for chomp approval

You all really came through for good ol’ Busby by sending in your Phipps support by the tens of thousands of dollars. With the matching grant, this was unbelievably helpful. Thank you all so much!

And some of you even included treats (ha!). Here’s a pic of Buzz right before he snarfed this treat donation from Michael D. On behalf of Busby: Thanks, Michael!

And thanks again to all of you for supporting this wonderful organization. It wouldn’t exist without you. Have a happy 4th of July!

thanks, Michael!
