Is Midnight Tonight or Tomorrow?

and how to maximize your fancy-pants Phipps snacking 🧁

Hello! I’m Ben, executive director at the Phipps.

Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.

cute town alert!

Did you attend the Minnesota Orchestra at the Bandshell event? If not, you missed out. Look at how packed that event was! This annual concert is quintessential Hudson Summer. Big thanks to the William H. Phipps Foundation and the Fred C. & Katherine B. Andersen Foundation for making it possible each and every year.

PROGRAMMING

Fancy-Pants Fridays

you should probably check out this exhibition

July 17th was a big day at the PCA, as we held two openings: the Summer Galleries Exhibition and Hooray for Hollywood. The latter was a quickie and has already closed (I hope you got to see it; it was very fun). The exhibition, however, will run through September 5th, so you still have time to catch it.

Real Phipps fans know that the best Phippsing happens when you coordinate an exhibition opening with a production opening. It goes like this:

Step 1: arrive at the Phipps promptly at 6:30pm
Step 2: meander through the galleries, meet artists, enjoy some light snacks and drinks like a real fancy-pants
Step 3: find your seat to the show at ~6:57pm
Step 4: after the show, find your way to the Rotunda Lounge for the opening night reception to meet even more artists, enjoy a slice of cake, and sip on some champagne like a real fancy-pants

Nearly all visual arts openings coincide with an opening in one of our theater spaces, so this fancy-pants plan will usually work. Enjoy your Phippsing!

EDUCATION

Big education = big Education Catalog

Hey!
Didja get the PCA’s brand-spankin’ new Education Catalog in the mail?

We’ve scoured the archives, and this seems to be the very first full-season education catalog the Phipps has ever issued. The glorious 30-pager contains EVERY educational opportunity we’re offering this year. THAT’S A LOT OF ARTS EDUCATION, Y’ALL! Huge kudos to Lee Ann and Kristin for putting this thing together. It was a beast to produce.

Registration for Fall and Year-Long classes opens tonight at midnight (one minute after 11:59pm Thursday; technically Friday 🙂) so click on the image above to check out the options and we’ll see you at Phipps School.

PERSONAL

Escaping my office (but not the building)

I’ve filed this one under “personal,” but I suppose it also pertains to my work here at the Phipps: I’m doing a show!

My good friends and longtime collaborators Sean Byrd and Laurie Kraft signed on to direct and choreograph the PCA’s upcoming production of Come From Away, and the opportunity to work with them again was something I just couldn’t pass up. In addition, my wife Amanda was also cast — and we’ll be playing opposite one another, which is something that hasn’t happened since college. Daawwwwww.

If you’re unfamiliar, Come From Away is an award-winning musical that tells the story of Gander, Newfoundland, which took in thousands of stranded travelers when all planes were grounded in the wake of 9/11. The PCA’s production actually opens on the 25th anniversary of that day.

Anyway, it’s looking like it will be a wonderful production. Grab your tickets here!

“yeeeaaaaah if you could get me that TPS report
that’d be great”

Today was a Busby day at the office and he was thrilled. đŸ¶
