Oops, We Have a Secret Cat Cult
and how to catch classical music at the Best Western 🎻
Hello! I’m Ben, executive director at the Phipps.
Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.

I hope they’re discussing 2026/27 PCA programming.
Some offices have a water cooler. The Phipps has a secret cat cult.
This group of faithful felines gathers daily to worship at the altar of — well, we’re not entirely sure — but it’s been the source of much discussion around the office lately. As long as they remain next to the coffee maker where we can all keep an eye on them, I’m sure it’ll be fine. Right?
This issue has…

per usual🎻 A Hotel Cellist
ear plugs discouraged🚗 A Door County Road Trip

The Root Beer Lady has left the building

We enjoyed two sold-out performances of The Root Beer Lady this past weekend. Did you get around to checking it out?
Kim Schultz, who not only performed the play but also wrote it, did a wonderful job bringing this interesting and heartwarming story to life. If you missed the show at the PCA, it’ll be touring around the area this fall…but you might need to head to Door County to catch it. Twist your arm, right?

I’m gonna help you try New and Different
I’d like to tell you a little more about something that’s coming up in November that might be new to you.
The event is called 5×5. The premise is 5 stories told by 5 performers in a 5-by-5-foot area onstage. Read that again. They do the entire thing in an area the size of a small dining room table.
If they require a set, they make it with their bodies. If they need props, they make them with their bodies. Everything needed to tell these 5 stories is provided by these 5 performers.
That’s still probably a little hard to imagine, so here’s a link to a video of this company (Transatlantic Love Affair) performing a preview to a different show waaaay back in 2012. So again: not the same show, not the same performers, but an example of this style of theatre. If you’d rather check out a written review, here’s a link to a write-up about 5×5 specifically.
If you’ve been attending events at the Phipps for 40+ years, this is likely something new and different…but I’m confident you’ll still enjoy it very much. To help nudge you to a YES, I’m offering a discount — and a hefty one at that: if you enter the code FLYINGP when ordering, you’ll get 2 tickets for the price of 1. Straight-up BOGO up in here!
So, take a chance on 5×5 and let me know what you think after the show. And look forward to more New and Different ‘cause I’m going to keep throwing it at you.

Time is running out if you have yet to check out the Chris Mars retrospective. Also, if you haven’t heard, we’ll be screening some of his short films later this month!

The cello is coming
Cellist Alexander Hersh is stopping by the PCA this weekend for an event called Beyond Borders.
If you’re unfamiliar with Alex and his amazing musicianship, check out the YouTube vid above and we’ll see you this Sunday!
And to the Hudson visitors with an adjoining room this weekend: you’re welcome.

Last Thursday was a Busby Day at the office and he got NOTHING done.
