Don't Blame Me; it Was a Phipps Monday

and how to get two standing ovations đź‘Ź

Hello!

Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.

Sorry Watch Out GIF by StickerGiant

Ope! My sincere apologies for missing last week. Mondays around here can sometimes get a little crazy, and last week was no exception. In fact, it happens so consistently, that we here in the office have coined the term “Phipps Monday” to refer to this phenomenon. I might eventually change the P’s publish day for this very reason. But for now, WE’RE STICKIN’ WITH PHIPPS MONDAYS!

This issue has…

THEATRE

First day of school!

Amanda’s Silent Sky take is A+.

Our final First Look of the PCA’s adult theatre season wrapped up recently with Silent Sky (opening March 7), and this was a great one.

We had some fantastic design presentations from Sound (Warren Sampson), Costumes (Bo Rainford), and Props (Sara Kessler). We even got to hear one of the actors (Sophie Finnerty) deliver a monologue from the play while Warren triggered specific sound cues live. It was so much fun!

And, of course, we were able to hear from our director on this production, Amanda White (my wife), who gave us some great insights into how she sees this one playing out.

Bo absolutely crushed this design presentation!

What “can’t” Cantus do?

Cantus sings!

If you were one of the lucky ones who got to see Cantus when they sang at the Phipps last week, congratulations!

Not only was it an amazing concert (2 standing ovations anyone?), but this group of people is top-notch, as well. So very nice and so very gracious. Not a stinker in the lot.

Here’s hoping we’re able to get them back sometime in the future!

They enjoyed being Phipps-famous.

No gallery pieces this week, as the galleries are closed for maintenance.

VISUAL ARTS

The kids are alright

“The Red Woods” by Dani Latz

I don’t have a “favorite gallery piece of the week” this week, so instead, allow me to offer you a piece I purchased at our annual High School Art Exhibition last year.

This wonderful little nugget is called “The Red Woods” and was created by Dani Latz, who was a senior at Bloomer High School last year. Thanks for the beautiful work, Dani (most young people read the P, right?). Hit reply and send me your worst idea for what to keep in it.

Also, huge props to Dani’s teacher, Kelsey Lemke-Howard. You’re doing something right, Mrs. Lemke-Howard. Keep it up!

Are you the smartest PCA person in town?
