EVENTS

A great community (day)

nothing like a PCA costume tour

We held our 2nd annual Phipps Community Day on April 26th and boy did we have a good time. A new season was announced, we had tours, we had games, kids were making art — you couldn’t escape the fun.

If you’re curious what this event is all about, Phipps Community Day is something we started last year in an attempt to clue more people in on the fact that …um… THE PHIPPS CENTER FOR THE ARTS IS A THING THAT EXISTS!

You wouldn’t believe how many times someone walks into the facility and says something like “oh wow…had no idea this was here.” I bet I hear it once a month! And so: Phipps Community Day — where, for a few hours each year, people can come in and wander around the building to better understand what we’re all about. And even better, the building is full of Phipps experts (staff, board members, volunteers, etc) to guide your PCA journey. If you have yet to attend a Phipps Community Day, are you even Phippsing?

Here are a few more fun pics of the day (courtesy of our friend Molly Weibel):

Black And White Reaction GIF

Maybe you recently caught this story on WCCO news about NEA funding cuts and the effect they’re having on local theaters (If not, give it a watch; it’s only a 2-minute story). Spoiler alert: they’re having a negative effect.

Now, the Phipps doesn’t get direct funding from the NEA (it does get a little from Madison, who in turn gets funding from the NEA) and we have amazing support from local foundations, individuals, and even a few lovely business sponsors — but all this recent economic uncertainty is bound to have at least some trickle-down effects. Hopefully not, but you just never know.

We at the PCA are always trying to figure out what you are going to do. Is he going to renew his Season Pass? Will she make a larger donation this year? Do they still want to register for this educational offering? The uncertainties surrounding what you may or may not do over the course of a season are always there…but they’re a whole lot stress-ier when we can’t even predict what’s going to happen three days from now.

We’re in the process of putting together our budget for next year, and although we’ll more than likely close our deficit this year (HECK YEAH), it’s likely we’ll be facing another one next year (HECK NO). Ah, the joys of running an arts nonprofit…

Are you going to renew your Season Pass? Could you find your way to a larger donation this year? Wanna take this cool pottery class?

Thank you in advance for thinking of my sleep habits when making these important decisions. 😉😴
