Press Your Love as Firmly as Possible

and how to sell your ladder for thousands of dollars šŸ’°

Hello! I’m Ben, executive director at the Phipps.

Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.

This morning, I was having a very detailed dream about the Holocaust when my wife’s alarm went off loudly playing Cyndi Lauper’s ā€œGirls Just Want to Have Fun,ā€ so that’s how my Thursday’s going. 🫠

This issue has…

  • 🐶 An Obedient Pup
    she’s so cute you guys

  • šŸ–¼ļø A New Exhibition
    opening tomorrow

  • šŸŽ¤ A Louie Anderson Story
or at least the story of that story

PROGRAMMING

Story Slam was a story slam-dunk

the rug really pulled the room together

We had a nice visit last Sunday from Strike Theater in Minneapolis for our Story Slam event. A large group of some of the most talented storytellers in the Twin Cities regaled us with tales that covered everything from their own intimate family dynamics to some very wild times with Louie Anderson…and everything in between.

Did you attend? If so, send me your thoughts. I’m hoping we can bring Strike back next season for another one of these very fun events.

they actually did seem this happy

PEOPLE

Adhesive quality may vary, your love does not

I gave it a tiny plug last week, but I think it’s worth taking a closer look at the ā€œLove for the Phippsā€ wall in our lobby. Have you checked it out yet?

I snapped a few pics of some of my favorites, but there’s also tons of love for our amazing Welcome Center staff, instructors, shows and classes…it’s really fun to see how the Center is connecting with you all.

If you have time, swing by and throw your heart on the wall (assuming you heart the PCA, which I know you do). When you put yours up, make sure you press extra hard on the sticky part because I was informed these are not 3M post-its and I feel great shame about it. šŸ™ƒ

I call this one ā€œRungs of Quiet Authorityā€ — $12,000; please see my 900-word wall label

my favorite gallery piece of the week
No favorites yet, as the next exhibition doesn’t open until tomorrow — but that reminds me that I should tell you that the next exhibition opens tomorrow!

Swing by tomorrow (Friday) btwn 6:30pm - 8:30pm for the opening reception. I’ll be slinging drinks at concessions, so come on by and I’ll sling one your way.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE

Things are going Sideways

looking nice and kooky

I poked my head into the JHP Theater to see how Sideways Stories is coming and it’s looking VERY FUN. This kooky play, which will be performed by a very talented group of local high school students, is right around the corner — set to open on Feb 20th.

If you have kiddos in your life, this one is guaranteed to make them smile…and probably giggle…and very possibly belly laugh.

Check out the really cool time lapse video below showing the load-in of this cool set.

look at that good girl

Gang, Jingle passed Level 1 Obedience.
I figured you’d want to know. 🐶
