The Tinier, The Funnier
and how to properly play an inflatable guitar 🎸
Hello!
Welcome to The Flying P, a weekly newsletter covering your Phipps Center for the Arts and anything else I might want to throw your way.
Well…it’s been a while, but the holidays are behind us and we’re on to a brand new year. Here’s hoping 2025 is everything you need it to be!

This issue has…

THEATRE
First Look at Wimpy Kid
director, Jeff Anderson, talks a bit about his concept
We had nearly 100 people turn up to the First Look event for Diary of a Wimpy Kid!
If you need a reminder, First Look is a series we started this year that gives Phipps patrons a sneak peek into the first rehearsal of our theatrical productions. They get to hear from the director and designers, see things like costume renderings, and in the case of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, hear the cast perform an early rendition of one of the musical numbers.
It’s a great (and fun) way to better understand how theatre works at the Phipps.

Cutest Stand-Up Comics

this little guy killed it
The second of our Stand-Up Junior series happened over the weekend, and boy was it a blast. Nearly 100 hilarious kiddos filled the black box to listen to a little (clean) stand-up and then give it a shot themselves.
My personal favorite part of this event is watching the professional stand-ups ABSOLUTELY SWEAT these tiny audience members. If you’re not bringing the funny, kids will 100% let you know. Utterly terrifying for the comics. Wonderfully hilarious for us.
There’s one more Stand-Up Junior on June 8th. Catch it if you can!

trying harrrrrrd not to bomb :)

Finding So Many Diamonds

this is what having fun looks like
We’ve entered the final month of The Show Must Go On, our black box puzzle game, as it must close on January 23rd.
The Phipps has had over 100 groups play this immersive puzzle game over the past two holiday seasons. The average time to complete the game is about 75 minutes, but the fastest time has been 32:48…which is just insanely fast, btw.
I’ve had the pleasure of occasionally filling in to host the game and guide the players through their backstage adventures, and it’s been so much fun. If you’re still looking for something to do with the family/friend group before things get back to normal (that ship has probably already sailed), definitely check out this unique event before it closes.
